On hearing again.

Another phenonemon I have noticed - mainly while watching documentaries on television - is that I come across a word I've never actually *heard* pronounced before, although it's part of my vocabulary. It's usually quite an exotic word - inconscient, for example - that I aquired in my late teens, post hearing loss. Every time I hear one of these for the first time, there's a moment of confusion, followed by a little shock and a thrill of recognition. "So that's what that word sounds like". It's a genuinely exciting thing to experience, even in very small doses. At last, I understand the Hellen Keller phenonemon.

Fatal statistic

Today, during my project management reading I learnt an interesting (albeit unsourced) statistic: people under 45 working for more than 48 hours a week have twice the risk of death from coronary heart disease.

Death March may be an uncannily apt description.

Internet Explorer is doomed once the one handed surfing crowd get hold of these Firefox tools. Not that I've actually tried them, I'll take their word for it that Firefox is the best porn browser, as it's good at lots of other things, too.

Time to check for rootkits

For the non technical people, rootkits are a very stealthy and hard - to - detect kind of virus, and very hard to detect and remove. They may not be malicious but having them on your machine is likely to slow it a little and/or compromise your privacy. You can catch them off seemingly innocent sources. If I'm really paranoid, I'd say this is why so many UK newspapers are giving away free CD's/DVD's. Of course, if you are running Mac OS X or Linux - nothing to worry about...
